A Pipedreams tour of historic organs in Italy

We’re doing it again, another trip to Europe. This time an exploration of the unique and little-known instruments of Italy, and you’re invited to join us.

Led by recitalist Margaret (Meg) Irwin-Brandon, our itinerary from April 27 through May 9 will take us from Milan and Como on to Venice, Bologna, the region around Pistoia, then to Lucca, Florence and Rome. We’ll savor a countryside rich in history, religious and civic art and architecture, and abundant in music (and good food, too).

Among our tour’s highlights are two of the world’s oldest preserved pipe organs (from 1475 and 1585) at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, magnificant in their modesty. For contrast, we’ll also hear an early 20th century monument, with more than 15,000 pipes, at the Duomo in Milan. And we’ll delight in the splendid variety of metropolitan churches with lavish decoration and demure country chapels, uplifting in their simplicity.
