We’re tuning up the high-pressure reeds on the Lay Family Concert Organ by C. B. Fisk in preparation for another sonic spectacular at the Meyerson Symphony Center’s McDermott Concert Hall.
Join Michael Barone for what has become an increasingly rare opportunity to revel in the glory of one of the world’s foremost concert organs actually featured in concert (!), with a program including tributes to Bach, colorful scores by local composers, a melodic Texas toast, and a world-premiere.
Co-sponsored by the Dallas and Fort Worth Chapters of the American Guild of Organists, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and WRR Classical 101.1FM, this concert showcases exceptional local talent, including prize-winners Dong-Il Shin, Susan De Kam, and Yoon-Mi Lim; Dallas Symphony resident organist Mary Preston; and special guest Stephen Tharp from New York City. Other regional performers include the husband-wife duo of Kiyo and Chiemi Watanabe, Christopher Anderson, Christopher Berry, and Henry McDowell.
Returning to Dallas to recap his role as master-of-ceremonies, American Public Media’s PIPEDREAMS host Michael Barone hopes to recreate the excitement of a similar event held at the Meyerson in 2005. That year, the hall was totally full 20 minutes beforehand, and several hundred disappointed audience members were turned away (though some sat out the first half in the lobby and were able to snag seats after the intermission). Let this be a word for the wise.
Advance general-admission tickets are available at a minimal charge. $10 Grand Tier; $5 all others, and may be purchased through the Dallas Symphony Orchestra box office
Doors open at 6:15PM to give you an opportunity to find a good seat and peruse the organ builder displays in the lobby. Meyerson concessions will be available before the concert and during intermission.

Saturday, September 11 (1-3PM) A related pipe-organ activity. The McKinney Performing Arts Center hosts a family-friendly program of silent films with theater-organ accompaniment featuring soloist Jim Pitts.

•1922 Buster Keaton in Cops
The balance of the program will feature audience participation and organ arrangements of movie/television show themes.
